Maria’s First Thanksgiving and a New Bed!

I know I keep saying I’ll keep up with the blog, then life gets in the way and it just doesn’t happen, I’ve just accepted that my posts will be few and far between, I do this for my pleasure anyway!

This weekend was (Canadian) Thanksgiving and exactly a year to the day we found out we were pregnant.

I can’t believe that was a year ago! Now we have this beautiful little munchkin and couldn’t be happier with our life.

We have so much to be thankful for this year, including the new bed….

A few years ago, before we were in  our house, our apartment flooded. A hot water pipe broke and it was a royal mess. The only advantage to having your apartment flood two weeks before Christmas is that you get a bunch of new stuff, including a new bed! Hubby and I went bed shopping with pretty much an unlimited budget because insurance was ”paying for it”. We picked out a fancy bed and loved it, for about 18 months. We started having problems with it just over a year ago. The pillowtop was indenting more than a mattress if it’s caliber should (>1.5”), and the pillowtop was almost pulling away from the mattress underneath. Those 2 rails should be lined up over top one another, you can see there’s a bulge and the pillowtop have shifted greatly left to right. Not cool Sealy.

Initially I thought it was me just being uncomfortable from being pregnant but it clearly wasn’t. Hubby and I have messed around with the bed frame and have resorted to sleeping with pillows between us to prevent us from totally rolling into each other, not comfortable at all. Add in a baby to the mix (we co-sleep while she still nurses at night) and we’re a real comfortable bunch. I decided to call and find out about our warranty thinking it was a long shot considering the bed was almost 3 years old but there was a 10 year warranty on the bed and after they inspected the pictures I sent (normally a rep comes to your house but he was on vacation) they issued us a new bed!

We picked it out last night and are counting down the sleeps until it arrives. Better deal yet, the new bed was less expensive because of a sale so they’re issuing a cheque for the price difference, double score! Now if only my poor broken dishwasher had a warranty still (it’s broken, *sniff*sniff*)…

Driftwood Heaven

That’s where I felt like I was this weekend. Driftwood Heaven. I’ll explain.

We went away for a family reunion to the beautiful golf resort in Dundee, Cape Breton Island, NS (which I found out today is the #1 rated island in mainland North America, CAN and US, and #3 in the world, pretty cool!). Dundee is only about three hours away from us here in Halifax, but is a first visit for both hubby and I even though most all his paternal family is from the island. Here’s the 9th hole of the course, just so you get an idea where we were:

Pretty amazing, eh?! ← That’s my Canadian coming out.

I could embarrass myself and show you a few family pictures from the weekend, but becuase I feel I would need permission from other members in the family (trust me, there are ZERO sober nice pictures of anyone) I won’t do it (Note to family members: I will kill you if something gets posted anywhere on the www. sans my permission…mmmkay?).

Here’s a quick one of my sister-in-law and I in all our wet-rainy-day beauty showing off our weekend t-shirts and matching celtic knots. I have a tattoo of two triskles (knots) intertwined on my foot symbolizing everlasting love and my sissy in law has a necklace from her (Northern)Irish boyfriend. If I don’t explain this we just look stupid:See? Explanation required…wow. Killer eyeballs.

Now since I am honoring the wishes of family members I will explain my post title, Driftwood Heaven.

Dundee is located on the Bras d’Or Lake which is a huge body of salt water smack in the middle of Cape Breton Island. It’s huge and salty. Salty water=wicked driftwood. I wanted to find a way to take this big boy home…hubby said no. I was thinking coffee table base?

To be fair it’s much larger in person. Like almost as tall as me large. Here are a few other shots from the beach, mostly of driftwood, which I LOVE. I think its the randomness of patterns that get created that I’m so drawn to:

I love my ”love shells”.

It was a great time with beautiful scenery, great drinks (…too many drinks, way too many drinks) and AMAZING company. It won’t be forgotten for a long time!

Beach Rock Doorstop

I love receiving my monthly Martha Stewart magazine and always excited to see what crafts she’s planned for the month. Back in March 2010 I came across this little rock doorstop DIY project. It was too simple, especially since I live in Nova Scotia-the beauty of being surrounded by ocean, I had an abundance of beach rocks to chose from!

All required for the project was a rock and felt (glue if needed- the felt I used was self adhesive, sticky on one side).

I simply cut the felt the approximate size of the rock and adhered it. Easy peasy! I made two, one for our bedroom and one for the bathroom-the two doors that seem to slam shut the most. No, not from my angry outbursts, from the crosswind that happens when the room windows are open! Without further adieu; the rocks:

{Please ignore clothing pile-yes I dump my clean laundry on the floor before I fold it. I’m human.}

Back to the pretty rock:

Now you have a simple DIY project, compliments of Ms. Stewart, for all your summer beach rock finds!

Evening Walk

This is part of ‘what I love about living in Halifax’ series.

My best friends (Kati and Laura) and I like to get in as many walks as we can in the summer, when family/work/life allows. The Salt Marsh Trail (a small part of the Trans Canada trail) is one of our favorites…Here’s why:

Great summer weekend with friends!

Long Weekend Fun

This past weekend we escaped to hubby’s family cottage for some good ‘ol Canada Day celebrations-complete with (questionably legal) fireworks and as always, it was a blast (pun intended). We’re blessed to live in such a beautiful province and have such a great place for the family to gather, here are a few pictures for your enjoyment:

Pictures from our little exploration around the cottage grounds and looking for a bog where we could catch venus fly traps (which we never did find):

We finished the weekend meals with a true Canadian cake hubby and I made…although ran out of decoration strawberries mid-way, still tasted yummers!Making a Canadian flag is slightly harder than the American me thinks. Although neither one of us can complain, we could have to attempt to decorate the Mexican flag. Brutal.

We had a great time, ate too much, got too much sun, ate some more, lazed, read a great book and enjoyed some good old fashion family time. It was perfect.

Photo Error

You may notice that some of the photos in past posts are not showing up-they accidentally got deleted from my media file (thus removing them from posts). Grrr. I will have to go back and upload them again. Forgive me as it may take a day or two :) .
