My $10.00 Ledge Shelves!

I’ve been wanting to make these Ana White ledge shelves since I saw them a few months ago.

I knew it would be a good starting point for making something out of wood, it involved no cutting (yeah! power tools still scare me a little…) a few nails (from a nail gun) and glue.

Ana White claims these shelves can be made for, well, $10.00. Off to home depot I went. I wanted 2 different length shelves so I bought enough wood for a 3 foot and 4 foot shelf.

Materials:

-One 1×4 (x36)

-Two 1×2 (x36)

-One 1×2 (x48)

-Two 1×4 (x48)

-Nails, small screws, or nail gun.

-Wood glue

-Wood hole filler

-Paint/stain/however you want to finish it.

-Sand paper (I used both fine 120 grit and extra fine 220 grit)

The wood did actually only cost a total of about $12.00 and I paid for the clear pine (less knots).

I first applied the wood glue and let dry. Once dry I secured the pieces together with the nail gun:

Once all the holes were filled I sanded with 120 grit paper first then went over with 220 to smooth out.

I chose to stain with ”Minwax” in walnut and finish with clear ”Varathane” (spray).

I decided to screw the shelves directly into the wall studs using 3” screws (stud finder, level and much taller hubby needed). You can see the screw heads but I’m going to color them with a black sharpie marker, I will have stuff on the shelves so you won’t see them anyway.

We have ideas for what we will put on them but we ran around the house looking for random things just to see what it looked like full:
